We’ve pulled out the main highlights for expectations and requirements below including grades, ages, clothing, practices and physicals. Get more information about what to expect in the Wakefield Crew Handbook (PDF), Safety Manual (PDF) and Clothing Requirements (PDF).

Athletes must adhere to the eligibility requirements established by the Virginia High School League. Additionally, Wakefield requires student-athletes to maintain a 2.0 GPA (eligibility policy approved by the Arlington School Board). Read more about the VHSL requirements and crew athlete expectations in the Handbook (PDF).

Students from Other Schools

Students from HB Woodlawn, Arlington Tech, and 8th graders in the district for Wakefield High School can participate in the crew team.

Swim Test (Novices Only)

All new rowers must pass a Swim Test prior to practicing on the water. The Swim Test will be administered for all new crew team members prior to the start of on-the-water training.

Winter conditioning occurs at the school beginning the week before Thanksgiving and continuing until tryout week. Tryout week is typically early-mid February. Students must have their physical forms turned in to participate.

In-season practices are six days a week (Monday - Saturday) at the Anacostia Community Boathouse.  Specific practice hours will be determined by coaches and sent to all rowers.

Practices are mandatory once season starts. You must email your coach if you are going to miss a practice. Unexcused absence means the rower will not row in the regatta that weekend. During Spring Break there are two-a-day practices in morning and afternoon and are required.

Transportation for Practice

A bus is provided during the spring season, which picks up and drops off at Wakefield. During the Winter season there is no bus. Carpools are typically coordinated between parents for the winter season.

Dressing for Practice

Winter Crew is indoors. Athletes should have running shoes, and a sweatshirt in case the team exercises outdoors.

In the spring, prepare for cold weather or rain or heat/sun, layers (Underarmor, long pants, no loose pants), must have sneakers every day, extra socks are important. Team will do cross training if they can’t get on the water.  Learn more about Clothing (PDF).
