Wakefield Crew Head Coach

Wakefield Crew

Wakefield Crew is committed to breaking down barriers to the sport of rowing. We welcome all Wakefield students, as well as H.B. Woodlawn/Arlington Tech students who are districted for Wakefield High School. Wakefield Crew operates at the intersection of inclusion and success.

Our program is run out of the Anacostia Community Boathouse in Southeast DC, where we practice from mid-February until late May. From mid-November until mid-February, the team trains at Wakefield High School.

Wakefield is a member of the Virginia Scholastic Rowing Association (VASRA). The team competes regionally in March, April, and early May before traveling in mid-May for the Stotesbury Cup Regatta and SRAA Nationals.

In 2022 Wakefield Crew was the most successful crew team in Virginia, with the boys and girls teams sweeping the state championships and the girls second 8 and boys freshman 8 earning 5th place at SRAA Nationals that same year. The 2023 season has garnered more impressive wins, notably with the girls first varsity 8 retaining its state championship title. In 2024, the girls first varsity 8 won the state championships for the 4th year in a row, an unprecedented streak for Wakefield Crew. In 2024, our team sent our 1st and 2nd varsity girls, our 1st varsity boys, and our freshman boys 8 to compete in the SRAA National Championship regatta, resulting in 2024 being the winningest season in team history.

As girls 1V stroke Mira Meek told after winning the Dee Campbell Trophy at the 2024 Stotesbury Cup Regatta, "Our Head Coach, Russell Topp, is the supercenter of Wakefield Crew. From suddenly stepping up to the role in 2023, he is why our 1V8 holds a 4-year state title and why we won the Cup today. Russell Topp is the lifeblood of Wakefield Crew!"
